Aging, Covid-19, and Cultural Images

Owo Many of the images of aging in our culture are already problematic. The majority of them fall into one of two broad categories. Depictions of older persons tend toward the extremes—the handsome, buff, tanned and white-haired guy surfing a shimmering blue wave on the one hand, the icon of marketers, and on the other hand, a shriveled woman withering in a hospital bed, the darling of the aging-industrial complex. Both have a kernel of truth in them, as do many stereotypes. The pandemic has over-emphasized the underlying truth of one while ignoring the truth of the other, and neglecting the diversity that both together represent.
