The next speaker of the Chautauqua series will be Myra Selby, who will address the topic “Weaving the Tapestry of Civility: Thread in the Rule of Law”. What happens to public trust and confidence in the rule of law as politics erodes the independence of the judiciary and impairs notions of fairness in the legal system? How can we increase and deepen the understanding of and respect for the rule of law, legal process, the judiciary, and the role of the legal profession?

Myra Selby is a former Justice of the Indiana Supreme court and currently practices law. She was the first African-American, as well as the first woman, to be appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court. She chairs the Supreme Court Commission on Race and Gender Fairness in the Courts. As the mother and aunt of African American and bi-racial young people, she is deeply worried that public trust in the judicial system will be severely undermined causing a generation to turn its back on the rule of law.

The series is being held the second and fourth Sunday evenings of each month from April 14th through September 22nd and is coordinated by Philip Gulley.  Each session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a knowledgeable speaker on that evening’s topic. More information can be found in the series announcement.
