Crossing the Aisle

How can good people be so sharply divided by politics and religion? How can we understand one another across these divides?

Women's Night Out

Women's Night Out will be this Friday, November 6th at Claddaugh's Irish Pub in Plainfield at 6:30 p.m.   We can sit and bask in the warmth of the fireplace and enjoy dinner and great UU companionship and conversation.  Join us for a taste of Ireland and possibly a Fish and Chips and a pint of Guinness or maybe a Sheperd's Pie and an Irish Coffee!

RSVP to Faye Ferrell, ferrellf8@gmail.com 201-7552.

Annual Meeting November 8

This year's Annual Congregational Meeting will be held at the Sunday Service on November 8.  There will be a Pitch-in lunch after the meeting.  As always, your attendance is important.  We will be voting on a number of important issues, including:

  • New Board Members
  • Proposed 2016 Budget
  • Delegates to the General Assembly

We will vote to fill four positions for the Board.  The candidates are April Lashbrook, Pat Pollack, Tasha Ritter, and Colleen Tennery.

Please be sure to attend the meeting and make sure your voice is heard!

Family Promise of Hendricks County

This coming week!!!

It is time for UUCC to host the families for Family Promise, a homeless initiative in Hendricks County.  Please check your calendars for the week of November 8th to 14th and see when you might be able to make dinner, host dinner or stay overnight as we work in partnership with Family Promise to help these families into stable housing.

Background checks are required to volunteer so please sign up early if you don't have a check on file.  Please contact Karen Cravotta at kacravotta@gmail.com or sign up directly online by visiting this link: https://www.volunteersignup.org/MFAP9

Monetary donations would be welcome to cover the cost of lunch, snack and breakfast food purchases.  Checks can be made to UUCC with Family Promise in the memo.

Gear Up for Christmas Day Dinner

Christmas table

It's that time of year again to volunteer for the Christmas Day Dinner (CDD).  There are numerous volunteer opportunities to fill between now and Christmas Day.  These are a few of the areas where you can help:  phone team (take meal request calls), Santa Workshop, kitchen, delivery drivers, and provide desserts for Christmas Day.

If you're interested in helping or have questions, please contact Pat Pollack at patnumb1@aol.com or call (317) 501-8187.

The CDD committee thanks you for your support!

Credo Discussion Group

Probably the most important thing to know about Credo for the coming weeks is that we will be providing coffee and donuts!

We are slowly working our way through the Escalating Inequality series of videos and associated discussions! I will be posting videos from the series on the church Facebook site, hopefully every day, for you all to see we have been watching and discussing. Hope you will join us some Sunday morning!

Calling All UUCC Musicians!

Angel shaped chalice with music note

Once again it is time to plan for the annual fundraising show for our Keys, Strings & Other Things live music series.  Each year this show features a wealth of talent who donate their time and performance to help support live music in Hendricks county—right in our church!  There are generally 5 or 6 acts (can be a band or individual) and each has 15 to 20 minutes to entertain the audience with their best stuff.  Any style of music is welcome—the more variety, the better.

This year's show will be on Saturday, February 13th. If you are interested in performing for the show, please contact me as soon as possible, but definitely by November 13th.  I'm giving first dibs to members and friends of our congregation.  If the show is not full by November 13th, I'll open it up to other performers; so get your bid in quickly, and thanks!

Dessert Auction in November

The Chili Dinner & Dessert Auction is planned for Saturday, November 21st. We need chili and dessert donations to make this night successful! A goodwill offering chili dinner with the fixin's will be provided by events committee. This will also be a great time to get a dessert for the Thanksgiving holiday and save yourself from needing to cook one. We look forward to seeing you there!! (Please email Tasha at tasha.renee245@yahoo.com if you are willing and able to bring chili or a dessert).

Chalice Circles

The Saturday morning chalice circle is meeting from 10-11:45 a.m. at the church.  The plan is to continue meeting every other Saturday.  Please contact Lynn Jettpace if you are interested in participating.

We also have a Wednesday morning group. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rev. Jenn, Lynn or Beth.

As more people express interest, more groups will be formed.

Rev. Jenn's Schedule

Rev. Jennifer will be away from church from November 11th to November 26th. She will not be answering email during that time but will respond to urgent phone calls.

The Rebellion of Self-Care

chalice with spiral and wheat

November is the month we have chosen to explore the idea of Rebellion. When you think of rebellion do you think of war? Of children who defy their parents? What comes to mind? What about subtler rebellions? I've heard several families talk about releasing clutter, creating a simpler life. Some of you are planning Christmas seasons based around experiences. We live in a society that is focused on consuming. Releasing stuff, choosing experiences over purchasing, both are their own act of rebellion.

Living with love for yourself is one of the greatest rebellions in our society right now. As we enter the holiday season we all get busier and often this results in increasing stress. It seems that our society almost expects us to be busy and active to the point of stress.

I encourage you to rebel this season! Set aside time every day and week to care for yourself, to do something that renews your spirit. Here are some ideas:

  • Spend time in nature
  • Schedule time for yourself
  • Express emotion through art
  • Keep a dream journal -- it can open you to greater self-understanding
  • Be a self-activist -- fight for your rights
  • Keep a smile journal -- collect articles, jokes, and pictures that make you laugh

There are many things you can do to connect with yourself, which helps us all be open to connection with one another. What else do you do for self-care?

May we all rebel this holiday season and renew our spirit.

In Faith,
Rev. Jennifer Gray
